Homeless woman sets self, pal’s privates aflame (http://news.bostonherald.com/localRegional/view.bg?articleid=189010)
A homeless woman doused the front of a male friend’s pants with lighter fluid yesterday and set his privates ablaze - but then landed in critical condition herself after her own clothing became engulfed in flames, officials said.
The bizarre blaze broke out just after 9 a.m. in a vacant lot near Ruggles MBTA station in Roxbury.
When police arrived, the man’s “pants were completely on fire,” said a law enforcement source.
“He had significant burns to his genitals and legs. He said that they had been fighting, and she had been threatening to set him on fire. He woke up, and he was on fire,” said the source.
Somehow, the accelerant soaked the clothing of the woman, which sparked a fast-moving fire across her body that was difficult for firefighters to extinguish.
“She was still flaming, screaming. She was burned over 80 percent of her body when we arrived,” said the source. “It was horrible. Her body heat was so high, the only part of her clothes that weren’t on fire, her jeans, caught fire.”
The woman’s injuries were life-threatening, and she was clinging to life last night at Massachusetts General Hospital. Her victim was also severely burned but was expected to survive.
Boston Police said the 9 a.m. fire on Washington Street and is now being investigated by the Boston Fire Department’s arson squad. Names of the burn victims were not released.
“It appears to be a domestic situation,” said BPD spokeswoman Sharon Dottin. “Boston Police are working closely with the Boston Fire Department Arson Unit to investigate the facts and circumstances surrounding this incident.”
The attack took place just two days after a Lynn man forced his girlfriend into an elevator at her workplace and blew them both up in a horrific-murder suicide as their 5-year-old son watched.
