Hey guys, Ive got a great new band to show ya this week. This time around were gonna serve up some good ol Southern Metal, straight out of Waltham Massachusetts! I know what your saying, "Southern Metal from Mass??!!" Thats exactly what I said! These four guys have decided to bring the FUN back to Heavy Metal, and give their fans the best possible kickass show they can possibly hear and see. Joining the ranks with bands like, Down, Artimus Pyledriver, and COC, Graveyard BBQ is keeping the Southern Metal genre alive and kicking ass thru the Metal world. So lets see what theyre all about. I talked with Graveyard BBQ guitar player Brownbag Johnson, and this is what he had to say:
100 Proof Metal-When did you guys get together, and how did you all meet?
Brownbag Johnson- well...the band was established in 2003 by 4 friends from the same town of (WALTHAM,MA) with mutual interests in creating this Hellraisin' hoaxy jokesy band to have fun and kickass. I was actually playing guitar in M.O.D (Method Of Destruction) at the time, and the bassplayer and drummer both had their own bands and projects goin on. We had absolutely no intentions in what this thing has done and become, a MONSTER! We've since changed some things up quite a bit (direction wise), but the sound and live show has stayed true and gotten much stronger, and the demonic possession has not yet been lifted! haha
Me-Who would you say is your biggest metal influences?
Brownbag- Everything from the old to the new... Sabbath, Priest, Pantera, Slayer, Sepultura, Mastodon, High On Fire, Soilent Green, Down, Crowbar, COC, Clutch, Motorhead, Morbid Angel, Celtic Frost, Immortal and beyond....
Me-Graveyard BBQ has a unique sound, how would you explain your music?
Brownbag- DIRTCORE. Its an old school Delta Country Blues sound fused with high energy Rock/Metal. Throw some slide guitar in there with some AC/CD thunder and Dirty boastfull vocals and you got yerself that signature sound that is GRAVEYARD BBQ. At the end of the day, we're just trying to bring back and create FUN, Kickass music- something that is very much lacking in today's music world.
Me-Being from Mass, whats the metal scene like there?
Brownbag- In the bigger picture..its actually pretty goddamn good! There's been alot of bigger Metal bands to come out of MASS within the past few years that have really dominated Metal music today, bands like Unearth, Killswitch Engage, Shadows Fall, etc... Much RESPECT to them.
Me-List any cds, demos, or metal compilation cds that Graveyard BBQ has put out, or been apart of.
Brownbag- Our debut CD "Greatest Hits Volume 1" was released last year independantly and is availble now thru our website www.GraveyardBBQ.com. We're about to hit the studio next month to record the follow up, and watch the fuck out, cuz this mothafucka is mean!! Hot,Heavy, and Dirty.
Me-Where do you guys see yourselves in 10 years musically?
Brownbag- Right alongside all of the LEGENDS...
Me-Go ahead and list any gig/tour dates that Graveyard BBQ will be playing.
Brownbag- We actually won't be touring again till early next year, but we are ending the year with a local show in Boston at The ROXY on December 10th.
Me-If theres anything else about the band that you want to tell me, do it here. Like, big name bands that yall have played with, interesting factiods, what kind of gear you guys endorse, anything you can think of that would make people want to hear your stuff. Go ahaed and plug it now.
