(CNN) - Reality TV star and former model Anna Nicole Smith was pronounced dead Thursday after being taken to a Florida hospital after being found unconscious in her hotel room, a law enforcement source with knowledge of the case told CNN.
Smith, 39, collapsed at a south Florida hotel and was taken to a local hospital, according to news reports.
TMZ.com had reported that Smith collapsed at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida, and was rushed to Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood just after 2 p.m. ET.
According to reports, Smith was found unresponsive in her hotel room.
Smith was involved in paternity suit regarding the parentage of her daughter, Danielynn, as well as other disputes, including ones regarding a house she stayed at in the Bahamas around the time she gave birth.
Earlier this week, Smith was included in a class-action lawsuit against a company, TrimSpa, for which she has worked as a spokesperson. TrimSpa makes a product it claims leads to substantial weight loss. The lawsuit alleges the marketing of the product, TrimSpa X32, was false or misleading.
Smith's son, Daniel Wayne Smith, died at age 20 just days after the birth of Smith's daughter. Pathologist Cyril Wecht said a lethal dose of methadone and antidepressants caused cardiac dysrhythmia, leading to his death.

Yeah, I just heard this!!! crazy!!! she's been ALL OVER the news & entertainment shows lately because of her son's death and 'who's the baby's daddy?' scandal... but this is sad...
speculate.... drugs? overdose? suicide?

I'm thinking unintentional suicide. Having lost her son was too hard and she had been using drugs again to help her feel better from all the emotional pain. She probbaly just took too much of what she was using or mixed it with alcohol.

yeah... you're probably right... she's had a LOT on her plate recently... too much for ANYONE to handle... especially the loss of her son, I can't think of anything worse that a parent has to endure...

here's a copy of the will (from CNN.com) (http://i.a.cnn.net/cnn/2007/images/02/16/pleadings021607v2.pdf)
Anna Nicole Smith's will is revealed
Story Highlights
• NEW: Anna Nicole Smith left everything to children
• Howard K. Stern is executor of will, written in 2001
• Judge orders Smith's body embalmed
• Mother wants burial in Texas; Stern wants Bahamas burial
FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida (CNN) -- Anna Nicole Smith left all of her personal property to her son Daniel, who died in September, and named longtime companion Howard K. Stern executor, according to a will released Friday by a Florida court.
The 22-page will, written in July 2001, was never updated. It does not mention her 5-month-old daughter, Dannielynn.
As executor, Stern is authorized set up and oversee a trust on behalf of Smith's children, and to make investments on its behalf. It is signed "Vicky Lynn Marshall," the name Smith used before assuming her professional name.
Smith's heirs would receive distributions at ages 21, 25 and 30.
The judge overseeing the dispute over the former Playmate's burial ordered attorneys to file a copy of the will, which has been the subject of intense speculation since Smith's sudden death eight days ago.
The document could be crucial to giving Stern the legal standing to determine Smith's final resting place -- the subject of a contentious courtroom battle between Stern and her Smith's estranged mother, Vergie Arthur.
Stern's attorneys say Smith bought a plot in the Bahamas, next to the plot where her son, Daniel, is buried. He died in September, three days after Smith's baby daughter, Dannielynn, was born at a Bahamas hospital.
Broward Circuit Judge Larry Seidlin also signed an order Friday to have Smith's refrigerated remains embalmed.
"We're beginning to give her peace," Seidlin said.
The procedure will be done Friday under heavy security at the Broward County Medical Examiner's office in nearby Dania Beach.
Meanwhile, the courtroom battle over Smith's affairs continued for a third day on Friday, with more days of contentious arguments to come. Any decision about releasing her body for burial isn't likely until next week at the earliest.
Seidlin ordered Stern to appear at the hearing Tuesday, and he is expected to testify. His lawyer, Krista Barth, argued unsuccessfully to have him appear by video phone from the Bahamas, where he is caring for Dannielynn.
Meanwhile, court-appointed administrator Shane Kelley began interviewing the parties to prepare for the hearing, which will serve as a mini-trial. Kelley will recommend to the judge who should receive Smith's remains for burial.
Outside the courtroom, the circus-like atmosphere surrounding the former TV reality show star's sudden death continued.
As speculation swirled over the will, another man, a former body guard, stepped forward to claim possible paternity of Smith's infant daughter.
No death certificate
Ron Rale, an attorney who represented Smith in a California paternity case, told CNN's Larry King that Stern is not named as a beneficiary in Smith's will.
"Larry, I would like to reveal it on your show. Another little tidbit. I think everybody will see that Howard Stern is not a beneficiary of that will," Rale said.
Smith's estate has not yet been opened because authorities have not yet issued a death certificate, attorneys told Seidlin on Thursday.
On Friday, Seidlin directed that the will be filed in connection with the burial dispute so it can be entered into evidence.
Smith wanted to be buried in the Bahamas, attorneys for Stern insist. Smith's estranged mother wants to take the body home to Texas for burial in the family plot, her attorneys say.
The two sides swapped barbs as they argued in court over everything from custody of the body to DNA sampling to whether a baby can be considered next of kin under Florida law. (Watch the contentious hearing played out before the cameras (http://javascript<b></b>:cnnVideo('play','/video/moos/2007/02/15/moos.anatomy.of.a.body.kcal','2007/03/17');)http://i.a.cnn.net/cnn/.element/img/1.5/main/icon_video.gif (http://javascript<b></b>:cnnVideo('play','javascript<b></b>:cnnVideo('play','/video/moos/2007/02/15/moos.anatomy.of.a.body.kcal','2007/03/17');','2007/02/16');))
Seidlin, the judge, has displayed affable aplomb as he tries to sort through a tangle of legal arguments and competing interests. He has referred to the squabbling lawyers as "a good group" and Smith as "beautiful."
Bickering lawyers
Besides the lawyers for Stern and Arthur, there are attorneys for Smith, daughter Dannielynn, and Smith's former lover, Larry Birkhead, who is seeking a paternity test to prove he is Dannielynn's father. (Watch CNN's Jeff Toobin try to untangle the legal mess (http://javascript<b></b>:cnnVideo('play','/video/law/2007/02/09/toobin.anna.nicole.legal.questions.cnn','2007/02/23');)http://i.a.cnn.net/cnn/.element/img/1.5/main/icon_video.gif (http://javascript<b></b>:cnnVideo('play','javascript<b></b>:cnnVideo('play','/video/law/2007/02/09/toobin.anna.nicole.legal.questions.cnn','2007/02/23');','2007/02/16');))
The lawyers have frequently traded barbs.
"The woman sitting across from me was estranged from her daughter. I have people who loved her," sniffed Barth, attorney for Stern, on Thursday. "She stands here today to take her to Texas and put her in the ground all alone. It's sad and it's sick."
Retorted Arthur's lawyer, Stephen Tunstall: "Counsel is trying to trash my client in some kind of emotional appeal. My client is her mother. She wants to take her back to Texas to be buried with the rest of the family. She has the right."
And so it went, all day Thursday for half a day on Friday and, from the looks of things, for many more days to come. The judge worked hard to keep things on track.
"We're trying to balance the rights and respect of the body with the legal issues," Seidlin said. "When we bury her, I want it to be forever,"
The judge has appointed a guardian, Miami attorney Richard Milstein, to protect the interests of Smith's infant daughter, Dannielynn. He also appointed Kelley, a Fort Lauderdale lawyer, to sort through the competing interests and advise him.
Witnesses, including people close to Smith, are expected to testify Tuesday.
Who's the father?
Birkhead and Stern each claim to be the father of Smith's nearly 6-month-old daughter, Dannielynn. Stern's name is on the birth certificate.
Smith's former bodyguard, Alexander Denk, told CNN's Larry King that he, too, could be Dannielynn's father, saying he and Smith had an off-and-on relationship for years.
Denk is the fourth person to claim he could be the child's father. Zsa Zsa Gabor's husband, Frederic von Anhalt, has said he and Smith had a decade-long affair and that he could have fathered the child. He filed court papers seeking a paternity test on Thursday.
Seidlin repeated several times that the most important issue to his court was the welfare of the baby. He also stressed the importance of maintaining dignity.
"We want to preserve the beauty and model figure of Ms. Smith," he said. "Beauty was important to her, as you all have indicated to me, and we want her to look beautiful when she is placed in her final resting place."
Smith, 39, died February 8 after she was found unconscious in her room at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino near Hollywood, Florida.
Among the issues the attorneys wrangled over was whether Stern had legal standing to determine a burial place, or even to take part in the proceedings; and who was Smith's next-of-kin under Florida law.
Tunstall, the attorney for Smith's mother, argued that Dannielynn did not qualify because a child must be over 18 to be legally considered next-of-kin.
The release of Smith's body -- and even the embalming process -- was delayed because attorneys for Birkhead wanted a DNA sample for a paternity test.
The judge ordered an additional sample be taken.

Smith’s estranged mother wants grandson exhumed, buried in Texas
By MATT SEDENSKY, Associated Press

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Anna Nicole Smith’s estranged mother told a judge Wednesday she wants to exhume her grandson in the Bahamas and bring his body to Texas to be buried along with his starlet-mother in her native state.
Smith’s longtime companion, Howard K. Stern, is fighting for the former Playboy centerfold to be buried next to her son in the island chain, where he died from apparent drug-related causes last year.
On the second day of testimony, Circuit Judge Larry Seidlin indicated the best result would be a compromise — and soon — since the medical examiner again warned Smith’s body was decomposing more quickly than expected and a public viewing could be in danger.
“When you walked into the court, you hope to get everything,” Seidlin said. “We will try to fashion a remedy where not everyone gets everything they want.”
Smith died Feb. 8 at age 39. Her cause of death is under investigation.
Without written proof of Smith’s wishes, Seidlin was forced to hear testimony from those who claim to know what she wanted.
Also at issue in a California court is who fathered Smith’s 5-month-old daughter, Dannielynn, who could inherit millions of dollars. Stern is listed as the father on the birth certificate, but a photographer who once dated Smith says the girl is his.
Smith’s mother, Virgie Arthur, testified that although she had not seen her daughter since 1996, they spoke on the phone more frequently. She cried as she spoke about her relationship with Smith and her 20-year-old grandson’s death.
She also disputed Stern’s testimony on Tuesday that Smith was always obsessed with her own death and expected to die young, just like her hero, Marilyn Monroe.
“You can’t make me believe that. She was too full of life. She loved life,” she said.
On Tuesday, Arthur had testified that drugs soured her relationship with her daughter. Arthur said the two talked only every few months and that Smith often called her in the middle of the night sounding “drugged.”
Arthur’s attorney, John O’Quinn, told on CBS’s “The Early Show” on Wednesday that Stern caused Smith’s drug problems, and that she was “egged on to say things sensational” about her relationship with her mother.
Stern earlier testified Smith never recovered from her son’s death. He said a grief-stricken Smith threw herself over his body as he lay in a coffin in the Bahamas, wailing, “If Daniel has to be buried, I want to buried with him.”
Stern attorney Krista Barth said she had bank documentation proving Smith had agreed to pay for two cemetery plots in Nassau. She showed an “Entertainment Tonight” interview in which Smith expressed hatred for her estranged mother.
O’Quinn said Smith’s son was buried illegally in the Bahamas. “There was no reason to be burying somebody who is not a legal resident of the Bahamas in the Bahamas,” he told CBS.
“This whole case is based on fraud, fraud, fraud perpetrated by Stern so he can always control everything and make money off of Anna,” he said.
Stern testified the couple considered each other husband and wife and had celebrated a commitment ceremony, though it was not legal. Stern said they had planned to legally wed this week. He conceded, however, that Smith had other lovers.
He also said he isn’t looking for any money from her estate and would waive his fee as the executor of her will. “I do not intend to get one penny,” Stern said.
A California judge refused to give up the paternity case involving Smith’s daughter but suggested there were still questions to be resolved before the courts can determine which state has jurisdiction.
Attorneys for Arthur and the other man who claims to be the father, Larry Birkhead, sought to discredit Stern. Birkhead’s attorney, Debra Opri, said Stern’s claim of a romantic relationship with Smith wasn’t even true.
Smith was the widow of Texas oil tycoon J. Howard Marshall II. The two married in 1994 when he was 89 and she was 26. She had been fighting his family over his estimated $500 million fortune since his death in 1995.
